This guide shows you how to build a repeatable vehicle ownership cost calculator for a car, truck, or motorcycle by combining financing, insurance, fuel or charging, maintenance, repairs, registration, parking, and depreciation. Use the method to compare vehicles on the basis of what they may cost to own each year—not just what they cost to purchase.

The total cost of car ownership is the amount you spend to acquire, operate, maintain, and eventually replace a vehicle. A useful estimate should include both predictable bills and less frequent costs that are easy to overlook.
A simple annual ownership-cost formula is:
Annual ownership cost = financing + insurance + energy + maintenance and repairs + registration and taxes + parking and tolls + depreciation
For a cash purchase, financing may be zero, but the money used to buy the vehicle still has an opportunity cost. You can either leave that item out for a simpler household budget or add an estimated return you might have earned by keeping the money elsewhere. The important point is to use the same approach for every vehicle in a comparison.
Depreciation deserves separate attention. It is not usually a monthly bill, but it represents the vehicle’s lost value while you own it. When comparing cars for sale, used trucks for sale, or motorcycles for sale, run the same mileage, ownership period, and resale assumptions across every candidate. When to recalculate
Revisit your estimate whenever a major input changes. Recalculate after receiving an actual insurance quote, changing your loan term, moving to a different registration area, changing your commute, or switching from home charging to more expensive public charging.
